Layout Styles Compared
Each style works best for certain room shapes. Here is a quick look at the trade-offs.
| Style | Best for | Storage | Walking space | Typical size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| L-Shaped | Square-ish rooms | Good (two walls) | Moderate | 4×6 ft and up |
| Galley | Narrow rooms | Moderate | Tight if under 36" wide | 3×6 ft and up |
| Corner Storage | Any small room | Best (uses dead corners) | Good | 3×5 ft and up |
| Single Wall | Very tight spaces | Limited | Best (open floor) | Under 3×5 ft |
Common mistakes
- Blocking the door swing. A vanity that sits in the arc of an inward-swinging door is a daily annoyance. Always check the swing radius in the diagram.
- Forgetting toilet clearance. You need at least 21 inches from the front of the toilet to any wall or fixture. Thirty inches is more comfortable.
- Ignoring the window sill height. If your window starts at 42 inches, a tall cabinet next to it will block light. Measure before you shop.
- Choosing a vanity over 24 inches deep. In a bathroom under 4 feet deep, a standard vanity eats most of your walking space. Look for 18-inch or wall-mounted options.
What to measure first
- Width and depth of the room at the widest points.
- Door width and which way it swings.
- Window position and how high the sill starts.
- Where the toilet drain and water lines are (mark these on your diagram).
- Any vents, outlets, or light switches that limit where you can place furniture.
Write these numbers down before you start browsing. It saves a lot of back-and-forth.
When to call a pro
This explorer shows floor plans, not plumbing or electrical. If you want to move the toilet, add a shower, or reroute a drain, talk to a licensed contractor. Permits may be required in your area.
Use this page to narrow down what you want, then bring the printed diagram to your contractor. It makes the conversation faster and clearer.
